Developing Your Color Story

As you may know if you’re reading this on our new website, we recently went through a re-brand. It was the first one we did completely on our own, with the help of some incredible online resources like Big Cat Creative and Etsy. However, I really loved our old color scheme and I wanted it to transfer to our new brand, so I needed to write out our color story to ensure it was cohesive throughout our entire brand. I did this using a few tools:

 

1.     Create a Mood Board

 

If you’re an avid reader of our blog, I’m assuming you think I sound like a broken record because when it comes to the visuals of your brand, starting with a mood board is one of the most important steps. This will help you identify the look and feel that you’re going for, and also allow you to pick out certain colors that stand out to you.

 

2.     Do Some Color Research

 

If you’re not extremely visually inclined, Pinterest is a great place to look up color schemes. This will also give you an idea of what colors go together and how to choose the right shades to compliment your main color.  

 

3.     The Pantone App

 

The Pantone App has been a huge life saver for me. While there is a paid subscription, you can easily scroll through their palettes and choose colors that resonate well with your brand. The most important reason to use the Pantone app is because it gives you the HEX # for the color that you choose, so that you can ensure you’re using the exact same color throughout all of your branding. Once you’ve chosen a group of colors, record the HEX #’s and then they can be used in Photoshop, Canva, etc.
